Research story
An aircraft company built your Outback.
In 1945 the company that would become Subaru wasn't allowed to build anything. Nakajima Aircraft had spent the war making military planes; the occupation broke it apart. What reassembled in 1953 put a constellation on the hood of its first car — and the count behind that constellation turned out to be a small arithmetic trick, not a mystery.

Engine
EJ25
The EJ25 was the mainstream 2.5L engine across US-market Legacy, Outback, Forester, and Impreza applications, and became the US WRX STI's engine from 2004 onward in EJ257 turbo form. Aftermarket-service-industry sources (not a manufacturer statement or independent engineering study) describe two distinct head-gasket failure patterns: internal coolant leaks on 1996–1999 first-generation EJ25D engines, and external leaks around the 100,000-mile mark on later EJ251/EJ252/EJ253 variants — a pattern those same sources say improved with post-2012 revisions and the FA/FB-family replacement, though this remains a service-blog-level claim rather than a rigorously verified one.
1996–present in some derivative form; the naturally aspirated/turbo EJ25 line was Subaru's mainstream 2.5L engine through the 2000s and 2010s before FA/FB-family replacement · US-market WRX STI (EJ257): standard 2018 Type RA donor car rated approximately 305 hp, with the adjacent MY2019–2021 export tune at 290 lb-ft (393 N·m) of torque; the 2019 US-only S209 (EJ257) was rated 341 hp / 330 lb-ft — notably the only S-series STI ever built on the 2.5L EJ25 family rather than JDM's 2.0L EJ20. The turbocharged EJ255 (2004–2009 Legacy GT / Outback 2.5XT) was rated around 243–250 hp depending on trim and transmission, with roughly 241 lb-ft (327 N·m) of torque at 3,600 rpm. Broader naturally aspirated EJ25 output across Legacy/Outback/Forester/Impreza applications is not comprehensively researched in the corpus. -
Engine
FB-series boxer four
The FB family, developed alongside the FA family starting around 2012, replaced the EJ engines across most non-STI Subaru applications and is the direct-injection-capable four-cylinder underpinning the bulk of the modern lineup — Legacy, Outback, Forester, Impreza, and the Levorg (not sold in the US). The Forester's SL generation extends the family into e-Boxer mild- and full-hybrid form, Subaru's first US hybrid powertrains for that model.
2010s–present · FB25 (Legacy/Outback/Forester): reported at 170–182 hp depending on generation and tune (e.g., 175 PS/174 lb-ft in the sixth-generation Legacy, 182 hp/176 lb-ft direct-injection in the SK-generation Forester and sixth-generation Outback). FB20D e-Boxer mild hybrid (Forester SL): a 12.3 kW electric motor paired with a modified gasoline engine, the motor alone contributing roughly 48 lb-ft (65 N·m) of torque; combined output not researched. FB25D e-Boxer full hybrid (Forester SL): an 88 kW AC synchronous motor paired with the FB25, the motor alone contributing roughly 199 lb-ft (270 N·m) of torque per Subaru's equivalent Crosstrek Hybrid spec sheet for the same motor architecture; combined output and combined torque are not published by Subaru for its hybrids. The turbocharged FB16DIT shares only its crankshaft with the naturally aspirated FB16 despite the shared displacement code. -

Research story
From a privateer's own Outback to a factory-backed win.
Carey Lando showed up to the hardest women's off-road rally in America in a Subaru she'd built up in her own driveway — no factory, no sponsor, paper maps and a compass and a car she owned. A couple of years later she was driving for Subaru itself, in the same Outback, and winning the class outright.

Independent Subaru overlanding aftermarket ecosystem
Distinct from Subaru's own marketing, a genuine aftermarket and enthusiast-media ecosystem exists around Outback/Forester/Crosstrek overland builds: companies including LP Aventure (Quebec, Canada), Primitive Racing, and Prinsu Design Studio (Idaho) build Subaru-specific lift kits, differential skid plates, and roof racks, and individual builds are regularly covered by outlets including GearJunkie, Overland Expo's own "Compass" editorial blog, Offroadium, 4XPEDITION, and The Adventure Portal. This supports only the general claim that the subculture is real and multiply documented — no production-count, sales-figure, or single "most notable build" claim is made, because none was found well-sourced enough to state as fact.

LegacyGT.com
A Legacy- and Outback-focused forum organized by generation/chassis code, with technical engine-teardown and rebuild sub-forums. Described by at least one competing forum as one of the only actively-used Legacy-specific forums remaining. A same-named .org domain and a separate 'LegacyCentral' board (bbs.legacycentral.org) also surfaced in research and have not been confirmed as mirrors, successors, or genuinely separate communities from LegacyGT.com — that disambiguation is an open research question.

National Ski Patrol partnership
Described by both organizations as the longest partnership either has, running 25 years as of 2021. Each winter, nine patrollers are selected from hundreds of applicants for a year-long "Ambassador" program and given a Subaru Outback to support their patrol work, tied to a "#kneedeepinwork" campaign. Subaru also sponsors travel/lodging scholarships for patroller-and-avalanche-dog teams at two dedicated dog-training schools (Wasatch Backcountry Rescue International, Utah; Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment, Colorado), with over a dozen dog-handler teams trained through the partnership as of 2021. Open thread: Subaru's broader consumer "Ambassador" program was reportedly discontinued/"reimagined" around May 2025 per enthusiast-forum discussion (forum evidence, not a corporate announcement) — whether the ski-patrol-specific partnership specifically survived that change is unconfirmed.

Nicole Kidman — notable owner
Nicole Kidman drives a Subaru by her own on-record preference, despite husband Keith Urban having bought her a Lamborghini Urus — a story that traces to Kidman's own remarks in a filmed Vogue Australia conversation with Victoria Beckham and was independently repeated across at least six separately-bylined outlets. Kidman describes herself as "not a car person," in contrast to Urban's collection (reported to include a Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari F430, and Rolls-Royce Spectre). The exact Subaru model she drives is not stated in any source located this pass. A widely-repeated forum claim that Kristen Stewart drives a Subaru Outback could not be substantiated — press coverage instead documents her driving older Toyota and Isuzu vehicles, reportedly to avoid paparazzi attention, with no Subaru connection found; other forum-sourced celebrity-owner claims (Joel McHale, Daniel Tosh, Dave Matthews, Fred Savage) were surfaced but not corroborated by an independently-bylined report strong enough to publish, and are recorded here only as unconfirmed leads.

Rebelle Rally — from privateer entries to factory teams
The Rebelle Rally is a US all-women, GPS-prohibited off-road navigation rally (paper maps, compasses, roadbooks) held annually since 2016, marketed as the longest competitive off-road rally in the US and the country's first women's endurance off-road rally. Subaru's relationship has a documented arc from privateer to factory: Andrea Shaffer is described as a 9-time competitor and "Original Rebelle" since the rally's 2016 debut, but what she drove in her earliest years is not established. In 2022 a privateer team (#204, Carey Lando and navigator "Angela"/"Angie" Lux) drove Lando's own modified 2014 Subaru Outback to 3rd in the X-Cross class — a grassroots entry, not Subaru-sponsored (status: provisional, resting on a search-synthesis source rather than a single directly-opened article). In 2024, Lando (driver) and Shaffer (navigator) campaigned the same Outback as Subaru's first-ever factory-sponsored Rebelle team and won the X-Cross class. For 2025, Subaru fielded two factory teams in X-Cross: #200 "MTNSUBI" (Lando/Shaffer, a 2025 Forester Touring Hybrid with STI components and RalliTEK/RaceWorks suspension work, defending champions in a new vehicle) and #210 "Desert Disco" (Emme Hall and Kendra Miller, a lightly modified 2026 Crosstrek Wilderness). The press material reviewed does not establish whether Subaru held any formal sponsor-tier relationship with the rally itself before 2024, as opposed to sponsoring individual competitor teams, or what involvement (if any) existed between the 2016 founding and the 2021-2022 privateer entries — an open research thread.

The EJ25 head-gasket question, honestly unresolved.
Ask any Subaru forum and you'll hear it stated flatly, like a law of physics: the 2.5-liter boxers eat head gaskets. The pattern turns up everywhere you look — everywhere except the one kind of document that would make it official. This is a case file with a strong lead and no smoking gun, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
