The second-generation Legacy is where the Outback began — not as a separate model, but as a raised, cladded trim package on this generation's step-roof BG wagon starting for the 1995 US model year. JDM and other RHD markets got a genuinely exotic EJ20H sequential twin-turbo ('Boxer 2-stage Twin Turbo') on the automatic GT sedan/wagon, alongside a related EJ20R manual-transmission turbo on the RS sedan and GT-B (Bilstein-suspension) wagon. US buyers, by contrast, got a naturally aspirated EJ25D DOHC 2.5L 'GT' from 1996 — not a turbo, despite the name.
