Production began in Japan on September 25, 2012, with North American sales starting for MY2013 as a lifted version of the contemporary GJ/GP Impreza hatchback, succeeding the earlier Outback Sport in North America. A first-generation hybrid — a conventional (non-plug-in) NiMH-battery system with a 10 kW motor, marketed as the 'XV Crosstrek Hybrid' — ran MY2014–2016 before discontinuation.
Global: sold as 'XV' outside the US/Canada; in the US/Canada launched as 'XV Crosstrek' (2013–2015 MY) before dropping 'XV' for 'Crosstrek' alone starting MY2016.
