From a privateer's own Outback to a factory-backed X-Cross win.
Carey Lando and Andrea Shaffer campaigned Lando's own modified 2014 Outback as grassroots privateers at the Rebelle Rally — the US's all-women, GPS-prohibited off-road navigation rally — before Subaru backed the same driver-and-car pairing as its first-ever factory Rebelle team in 2024, winning the X-Cross class. By 2025 Subaru fielded two factory teams, part of a broader institutional push into off-road and overlanding culture alongside partnerships like the National Park Foundation and Overland Expo.
A privateer team first
In 2022, Carey Lando and a navigator drove Lando's own 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i — modified with a Nickgyver Enterprises front bumper, King springs, Bilstein B6 shocks, and an LP Aventure 2-inch lift — to 3rd in the X-Cross class, with no Subaru sponsorship involved. Subaru's first-ever Rebelle win
In 2024, Lando (driver) and Andrea Shaffer (navigator) campaigned the same Outback as Subaru's first explicitly factory-sponsored Rebelle Rally entry and won the X-Cross class — reported as the first-ever Subaru win at the rally.
Two factory teams by 2025
Subaru fielded two X-Cross factory teams in 2025: #200 "MTNSUBI" (Lando/Shaffer, defending champions, now in a modified 2025 Forester Touring Hybrid) and #210 "Desert Disco" (Emme Hall and Kendra Miller in a 2026 Crosstrek Wilderness). Hall is a two-time prior Rebelle Rally class champion and the rally's first EV competitor, independent of her Subaru drive.
