Legacy Outback Forester Impreza, WRX & STI Baja

No diagnostic trouble code triggers this — it's a mechanical wear pattern reported by independent repair shops in the naturally aspirated, SOHC 2.5L EJ25 boxer engine used across multiple Subaru families from 1996–2004. Sourcing describes two variants: earlier (1996–1999) 'EJ25D' engines reportedly developing internal head-gasket leaks (coolant loss without visible external seepage), and later EJ251/EJ252/EJ253 variants reportedly developing external leaks at the head-to-block mating surface, most often around the 100,000-mile mark.

Symptoms

  • Gradual, unexplained coolant-level drop between services
  • Intermittent overheating, especially under sustained load
  • Visible coolant or oil seepage at the head-to-block mating surface (external-leak variant)
  • White or sweet-smelling exhaust, or a persistent coolant smell (internal-leak variant)
  • Milky residue on the oil fill cap or dipstick in advanced cases

Likely causes

  • Head-gasket wear/failure specific to the naturally aspirated SOHC EJ25, reported by repair-trade press as more common than in the DOHC variant
  • Failures reported clustering around the 100,000-mile mark rather than early in the engine's life

Safe initial checks

  • Check coolant level and color, and look for a documented history of coolant top-offs in service records
  • Inspect visually at the head-to-block mating surface for residue or staining
  • Have a shop perform a cooling-system pressure test and/or a combustion-leak (block) test before assuming head-gasket failure
  • Confirm the exact engine code (EJ25D vs. EJ251/EJ252/EJ253, and naturally aspirated vs. turbocharged) before treating this pattern as relevant — it does not describe the turbocharged EJ20/EJ255/EJ257 engines used in the same families and era
