The vehicle that finally closed Subaru's three-row gap.
The Ascent debuted for model year 2019, on sale from Q3 2018, explicitly filling the three-row gap left by the Tribeca's January 2014 discontinuation — a roughly four-model-year gap during which the two-row Forester and Outback were Subaru's largest North American offerings. Its FA24 2.4L turbocharged direct-injection flat-four (260 hp) marked a departure from the larger flat-six engines (the SVX's EG33, the Tribeca's own H6 units) Subaru had previously used in flagship applications. First full calendar year (2019) sales reached 81,958 units, declining to 56,286 by 2024 — still an order of magnitude above the Tribeca's terminal-year sales.
