Forester · 1996–1997
Before the showroom, twenty-four hours at speed.
The first Forester’s launch story includes an unlikely setting: Indianapolis. Subaru’s production milestone release remembers an endurance run months before the car reached Japanese customers.
A different kind of introduction
The Forester became familiar as a practical tall-bodied Subaru. Its early public record also contains an endurance claim. Fuji Heavy Industries’ 2006 retrospective dates a 24-hour Indianapolis run to 30 October 1996, before series production began.
Keep the record in its lane
The manufacturer reports an average of 180.082 km/h over that run and cites FIA and ACCUS approval. That is an endurance average, not a road-car top-speed specification. The independent sanctioning record is still an acquisition target for this archive.
Three markets, three dates
Production began in December 1996. The same release dates the Japanese introduction to February 1997, the US introduction to July and the European introduction to September. One global launch date would lose useful history.
The million-car milestone
In February 2006, Fuji Heavy Industries announced that cumulative Forester production had passed one million. This is worldwide output accumulated across years; it is neither a single generation’s total nor a count of cars still on the road.
A history you can check
The appeal of this launch story is its sequence: an endurance attempt, production, then staggered market introductions. Each event answers a different question. Keeping them separate gives an owner a better reference than a single year printed beside a photograph.
