One engine layout, almost the whole lineup.
A WRX kid at a parking-lot meet and a Forester owner at a trailhead might not agree on a single thing — except that their engines lie flat and their all-wheel drive runs straight down the middle. Subaru didn't invent either idea. It just built an entire identity, and nearly its whole lineup, on the two of them together.
Borrowed, not invented
The horizontally-opposed "boxer" layout — pistons punching outward in opposite pairs — goes back to Karl Benz in 1887, and most people have ridden behind one without knowing it: Ferdinand Porsche put a flat-four in the Volkswagen Beetle. Subaru's own boxer story starts in 1966, with the EA-family engine in the Subaru 1000. The remarkable part isn't that Subaru thought of the layout. It's that Subaru refused to give it up, and wrapped a brand around a piece of engineering everyone else treated as a niche.
Straight down the middle since 1972
Bolt a flat engine low and in line with the transmission and driveshaft, run equal-length axles to both front wheels, and you get a drivetrain that's genuinely symmetrical about the car's centerline. Subaru introduced that arrangement in 1972 on the Leone 4WD Estate Van and, by 1996, had made all-wheel drive standard across essentially the entire small-and-mid-size lineup — the decision that quietly turned a quirky engine choice into the reason people buy the cars at all.
The rumble people mourn
Pre-2013 turbo EJ engines breathed through unequal-length headers, and the uneven exhaust pulses gave them a burbling, off-beat idle that owners will describe in almost religious terms. When later, smoother-running engines lost it, the forums didn't celebrate the refinement — they held a wake. Few mass-market brands have a sound their customers grieve. Subaru does.
