The chassis where the US got its own S-series STI for the first time ever.

This generation split the WRX/STI off the Impreza name entirely and, in 2018, brought the US market the 500-unit WRX STI Type RA (2.5L EJ257, roughly 310 hp versus 305 hp standard), followed in 2019 by the S209 — 209 units, all earmarked for the US, and confirmed by Subaru of America's own press kit as the first-ever S-series STI product built for a market outside Japan. Meanwhile JDM STI kept running the 2.0L EJ20 family in parallel all the way through the 2017/2018 S208 and, per the research corpus, a 2025 S210 (500 units, JDM-only, reportedly the first S-series car with a CVT and the least powerful since the original S201 at 296 hp from a 2.4L turbo) — figures not yet cross-checked against a primary source.

Scope

Standalone US/global WRX and STI chassis, separate from the contemporary GJ/GP Impreza; JDM STI continued its own parallel EJ20 S-series catalog on a separate chassis lineage through 2025.

Configuration

Trims and transmissions

The S209 is the only S-series STI ever built on the US 2.5L EJ257 rather than JDM's 2.0L EJ20/EJ207 family — a direct consequence of it being built outside Japan's 'gentlemen's agreement' power-cap constraints.

Identification and ownership notes

A genuine US Type RA is individually numbered (of 500) and carries a carbon-fiber roof and pedestal wing with the spare tire deleted; a genuine S209 is one of only 209 cars, in either WR Blue Pearl or Crystal White Pearl.
