Built on the Subaru Global Platform and sharing its Impreza (GK/GT) platform, this generation added a genuine plug-in hybrid for MY2019+: 17-mile electric range, 35 mpg combined, an FB20 engine detuned to 137 hp paired with a 118 hp traction motor — sold in the US only as a compliance car limited to California-emission-standard states, not a nationwide offering. A separate, mechanically distinct e-BOXER mild hybrid (12.3 kW motor) launched in Europe in 2019 for both this generation's XV and the contemporary Forester.
