Subaru's first mass-production EV — and a rocky launch.

The Solterra shares its e-TNGA platform and powertrains with the Toyota bZ4X, with engineering labor split roughly opposite to the BRZ project: Toyota led battery and electric-drive-unit development, while Subaru contributed its AWD control systems and collision-safety engineering. Launch-spec output was 150 kW/201 hp (FWD, single motor) or 160 kW/215 hp combined (AWD, dual motor), with EPA range of 222–228 miles and DC fast charging reported capped at 100 kW with a flat charge curve by a contemporaneous first-drive review — a figure that conflicts with a separately reported 150 kW figure elsewhere in the research corpus, unresolved as to whether the higher number applies only to the later facelift. In June 2022, roughly 2,600 Solterras (plus the equivalent bZ4X count) were recalled over a wheel-loosening/detachment defect, with production paused until a fix was identified by October 2022. A 2026-model-year facelift (debuted April 2025) increased power (233 hp base FWD, 338 hp for a new XT AWD trim), added a larger 74.7 kWh battery, and claimed roughly 25% more range.
